The link between diabetes and erectile dysfunction

Up until the latter part of the 20th century the pharmaceutical industry focused on the development of therapeutic intervention for conditions with high levels of mortality such as cardiovascular disease and cancer. This situation is gradually changing as "quality of life" issues are becoming more important. Hence, the drug development community is increasingly targeting conditions that are usually not directly life-threatening and only cause significant disability in extreme cases. Perhaps the best example of such "quality of life" conditions is erectile dysfunction. This condition affects 31% of men and hence the launch of Viagra in 1998 produced a blockbuster for Pfizer almost overnight, with sales reportedly totaling $1.5 billion in 2001. Erectile dysfunction continues to hold commercial promise and raising the profile of sexual dysfunctions has resulted in a second wave of pharmaceutical activity targeting female sexual dysfunction. To reflect the growing importance of "quality of life" issues LeadDiscovery has now launched a new focus section "Lifestyles" which will highlight advances in conditions such as erectile dysfunction, IBS and stress. This week we focus on links between diabetes and erectile dysfunction. The two conditions have long been linked, however in a recent study of a large cohort of diabetics, this link has been probed in detail. A study of over 31,000 men, aged 50 years or older, has revealed that duration of diabetes was positively associated with increased risk of erectile dysfunction relative to nondiabetic subjects. Patients with type 1 diabetes were more likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction than those suffering type 2 diabetes. The treatment of diabetes complications represents a growing priority and erectile dysfunction is emerging as one such complication. Our recent report identifies new targets for erectile dysfunction and places these in the context of diabetes. Erectile dysfunction and our report may therefore be of growing interest to those companies with a focus on diabetes.
