The information derived from this test can assist physicians in making decisions about the administration of chemotherapy to improve disease-free survival. A similar test has been developed for the detection of circulating colorectal cancer cells in blood. This determines that patients undergoing post-operative surveillance for recurrent colorectal cancer remain free of disease. Intensive research and development is being conducted on treating metastatic colorectal cancer with novel therapeutic agents specifically targeted only to those cancer cells.
