EnteregŪ (alvimopan), Adolor's lead product candidate, is a small molecule, a peripherally-acting mu opioid receptor antagonist (PAM-OR) and the first of this class. Entereg is designed to inhibit the adverse side effects of opioid analgesics on the GI tract without interfering with their beneficial analgesic effects. Entereg is currently in late stage development to manage postoperative ileus, a negative gastrointestinal side effect following bowel resection surgery. Entereg is also being developed to manage negative GI side effects associated with opioid use. These side effects can negatively impact quality of life for millions of patients using opioid analgesic products, such as morphine, to treat pain. Adolor is collaborating with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) for the development and commercialization of Entereg for POI and OBD.
