The Advanced Centre has been a Research Council Centre since 1987, a national Interdisciplinary Research Centre since 1991 and is now operated as a Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) sponsored institute. In the last decade the Centre has received the largest research grant support in the field from the UK research councils. The Advanced Centre focuses on research which draws together a coherent view of whole bioprocesses. By collaborating with leading scientists in over 20 universities it is able to work on many of the most exciting frontiers: such as the production of plasmid genes for therapy and of antibody fragments for targeting, the process implications of metabolic engineering and biotransformation engineering for chiral chemicals. The Centre is also exploring the challenges of producing chemicals and pharmaceuticals from transgenic plants.
The Centre’s whole-process oriented research links its fermentation, downstream processing and biotransformation studies and they are further integrated by research on monitoring, modelling and scale-down of complete bioprocesses. The value of this work is enhanced by the ability in the Centre to verify the scale-down and modelling at large-pilot scale. In the 1990s, £20M has been invested in outstanding new facilities. The Centre is part of one of the top four multifaculty research universities in the UK.
