Biognosis Limited

The original concept for the development of Biognosis related to acquiring rights to Cuban technology and sponsoring research in that country. To that end the Company is sponsoring a research programme for new and novel diagnostic kits based on Biognosis patented technology combined with novel Cuban reagents. In December 1998 the Company acquired all of the assets of Abion GmbH of Julich in Germany. This has become the core of the Company diagnostics business and now employs some 40 people – mostly in research. The former Abion Company had spent some DM40m in developing an automated machine for human diagnostic analytical procedures. Despite the initial loss of turnover this activity has now been discontinued in favour of what was originally a side activity to supply rapid, quantitative tests for the Point of Care market. The first of these novel kits will be available for sale in early 2000 when it is anticipated that they will represent a real breakthrough for this market. In addition to these advanced in-house products, the Company will be marketing a full range of rapid diagnostic tests through the world wide distribution channels currently being established. Thus, the Company has developed a fully-fledged Diagnostics Company with an exciting, novel product range servicing a rapidly growing, niche market. The German Company is negotiating with other companies who have established chemistry that they would like to market using the Biognosis platforms.

The German Diagnostics Company (Biognosis GmbH) is negotiating add-on companies or activities associated with later generations of point of care products. These newer activities include development of the point of care applications of the miniaturised and chip technology being developed by Senova GmbH – a Company funded by much the same group of investors as Biognosis.

Rolf Haker is CEO of the German Diagnostics Company. Dr David Huckle is the Business Development Director for both the UK and German operations whilst Dr Peter Miethe manages the research programme in Germany. Dr John Meers remains Chairman of the various operating companies and other senior appointments will be announced in the very near future.
