5Prime, Inc

In 1985 5 Prime -> 3 Prime, Inc. was founded by Robert and Linda Morris in Paoli, Pennsylvania. The company started with two employees and one product, the Select Spin column. The select spin column was a pre-filled, pre-hydrated centrifuge column that purified DNA by size exclusion. This product was introduced by mailing literature to a list of scientists named in federal research grants. This approach became the model for future 5 Prime campaigns. The company grew steadily, eventually developing 275+ plus products for the molecular biology research market. These products and kits aid scientists in performing complex molecular biology experiments, making their work easier, faster or less expensive. The direct marketing program evolved to utilize animal characters to promote the benefit of the products. Although many animals were used over the years the tree frog character was most associated with the image of the company. Researchers referred to 5 Prime as the “frog” company and that image made its way to the cover of the 5 Prime catalog in 1997. As the company grew it moved to larger facilities in Pennsylvania and eventually to Boulder, Colorado.
Eppendorf – Netheler- Hinz GmbH (after the conversion into a joint-stock company re-named in Eppendorf AG) purchased the company in June of 1998, and the name of 5Prime-3Prime was changed to Eppendorf – 5 Prime, Inc.
In March 2000 the manufacturing and production operation was moved to a larger facility in the Gunbarrel area and in February 2001 the remainder of the company followed.
In summer 2000 the activities of Eppendorf BioChem were transferred from Berlin (Germany) to Boulder, implementing the PCR technology at Eppendorf-5Prime. The new role of Eppendorf – 5 Prime is to continue to develop and manufacture high quality, high performance reagents and kits for molecular biology research. The competitive advantage for EAG lies in offering complete systems for the customer (one stop shopping of instruments – consumables – chemistry) by utilizing the worldwide marketing and distribution clout of EAG to penetrate the global market
