The AB BIODISK name, company spirit and reputation are based on commitment to the highest standards of science. The company is perhaps best known for its dedication to antimicrobial resistance testing since the early 1950s. The mission left by its scientific founder, Hans Ericsson, Professor of Microbiology at the Karolinska Institute, “to Promote the Rational Use of Antibiotics” has been faithfully pursued for over 50 years.
AB BIODISK develops new product concepts and processes for manufacturing unique high quality diagnostic tests. The company's proprietary technology enables biochemical reagents to be accurately dispensed in picogram quantities in stable dry-chemistry formats. This innovative technique is used to produce antibiotic gradients for products like Etest®, System U3® and other forthcoming products.
Significant resources are dedicated to research and development and include in vitro studies of new antibiotics, antifungal and antimycobacterial agents. Susceptibility testing of fastidious and unusual organisms, detection of resistance mechanisms and epidemiologic investigations often involve collaborative work with laboratories throughout the world. This research exchange has opened up new product applications for testing of anaerobes, H. pylori, M. tuberculosis, M. avium-intracellulare, yeasts, moulds, mycoplasma and many other challenging organisms. Studies of enzymes conferring resistance e.g. ESBLs, metallo beta-lactamases, AmpC and other resistance mechanisms such as glycopeptide resistance in staphylococci and enterococci are on-going projects.
AB BIODISK is a privately held company with facilities for research and development, manufacturing and marketing situated in Solna, Sweden.
