Avicenna

Over the past fifteen years or so, although community pharmacies have continued to provide an effective service, successive governments have moved to reduce the revenue from dispensing. This has been the result of persistent pressure on the National Health Service budgets due inter alia to increasing costs of new treatment regimes and the greater longevity of the population. It is a situation that has been reflected throughout most of the major economies in Europe where a range of strategies have been applied to achieve the same objective. At the same time, the OTC side of pharmacy business has been adversely affected by the continuing growth of the superstores, the change in shopping habits and the general widening of the market place.
The pharmacy chains continue to grow and many of the most attractive businesses are being bought at premium prices, effectively out of the range of the independent buyer.
