The life science research community is a uniquely vital component of our society. Those dedicated to gaining an understanding of fundamental biological processes appreciate its profundity and, along with the casual observer, are aware of its value to an improved quality of life. Bio.com exists to create a distributed, online community of scientists, professionals, businesses and organizations supporting the life sciences for the purpose of facilitating communications and disseminating information within that community. Opening channels of information can only benefit those who strive to contribute to these endeavors, and we are very pleased to have an opportunity to participate.
Bio.com is the successor to BRNI, an Internet project initiated in early 1992. At that time, the Internet was used solely for research purposes and I had no preconception that its use would become as wide-spread and general as it is today. In retrospect, it's difficult for even me to recall that we were one of only 50 websites that existed worldwide in 1992. We've watched the rise and fall of the "dot.com" boom and have proudly remained true to our cause through it all. It has been a challenge for us to grow and adapt to the rapidly changing Internet environment, and it often seems that our long-range plans change weekly. Consequently, Bio.com continues to be a work in progress-with dynamic goals and dimensions. Please utilize and judge Bio.com accordingly.
We solicit your participation. Your comments, suggestions and criticisms are invited. We are open to discussing collaborations with other organizations and motivated individuals. Oddly, despite the large number of professionals using Bio.com, we do not receive the level of feedback we desire. It amazes me how our acceptance has grown to the point that we seem to be somewhat taken for granted. Perhaps the best indication of this is the sudden response we get whenever a server goes down.
Bio.com is a commercial enterprise, owned and operated by BIO.COM. We are not funded by the government and have not requested any form of tax-exempt status. We believe that free enterprise affords us the greatest latitude to pursue our goals with the least compromise due to bureaucracies and politics. In effect, we are willing to allow our success to be based on the value we yield. And, we continue to grow as we enter our 10th year in business.
Why do we quote the Tao? It is a simple reminder that our purpose is not to change the world, but to be a part of it. To that end, we feel that we've been very successful as our participation and contributions are beyond dispute
