BIOTECON Therapeutics is engaged in the development of pharmaceutical preparations based on the various serotypes of botulinum toxin. These toxins, produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, are the cause of botulism, which is acquired in most cases by food poisoning and leads to a potentially fatal flaccid paralysis of striated muscles. During the last decade botulinum toxins have attracted increasing interest as potent pharmaceuticals for the treatment of dystonias, spasms, hyperhydrosis and several other disorders connected with muscle hyperfunction.
