bitop was founded in 1993 by researchers from the private Witten/Herdecke University.The main area of expertise of bitop is the use of microorganisms for the production of high-grade products. bitop is the world-leading company in the development and production of new compatible solutes=extremolytes from extremophilic microorganisms. Compatible solutes are stabilizers of biological structures ( proteins, cells and tissue), they provide protection from extreme environmental conditions like e.g. heat, UV radiation or dryness. Compatible solutes find their application in protein, cell and skin protection. In the year 2000 bitop AG has received the Ruhrgebiet Innovation prize for the development of the product Ectoine on the basis of the biotechnological procedure "bacterial milking".
