(2) The integration of Germany into an ever-growing international division of labour characterises our economy. (3) The demographic change is effecting both economy and society.As are all industrial nations, Germany is in the transition phase from the industrial to the information age. Above all, information and communication technologies are accelerating this worldwide transition process. They speed up transactions and make them cheaper, enable global communication to take place thus making commodities and services available more rapidly and widely on a worldwide level.The Federal Government gives high priority to the active shaping of the social development from an industrial, to a knowledge-based information society. For this reason, in autumn 2003, the Federal Government approved the action plan entitled "The Information Society Germany 2006". The areas of the Digital Economy, eGovernment and IT in education, research and health are focal points of this new programm.
