Calhoun Vision, Inc.

In the United States, approximately 3 million cataract procedures are performed annually; an additional 3 million cataract surgeries are done in Western Europe and Japan. During cataract surgery, the cataract (cloudy lens) is removed and replaced with an intraocular lens designed to precisely focus images on the retina for clear post-operative vision. Depending of the length of the eye and power of it front surface, the cornea, an intraocular lens is carefully chosen with a specific power for each patient’s eye. Owing to a number of factors such as inaccuracy in pre-operative measurement of ocular dimensions, wound healing following surgery, and preexisting astigmatism, the majority of patients require prescription glasses after cataract surgery to achieve optimal vision. There is currently no means to adjust the final power of an intraocular lens once the eye has healed and the refractive error has stabilized. Thus, approximately 50% of patients wear spectacles to achieve optimal vision after cataract surgery. This is unfortunate, because many patients would prefer to avoid wearing spectacles after cataract surgery for such tasks as driving, playing sports, or watching television.
