Download PDF Members: The University of Basel Uni Basel is Switzerland's oldest, founded in 1460. Today the focal points of research and education are the life sciences (centered around the world-famous "Biozentrum") and the humanities. The student population numbers over 8000, including a large number of postdoctoral students; the total budget (excluding clinical medicine) is approx. 300 Mio$. The University is a largely autonomous institution in the public domain, governed by an independent University Council in the framework of a global budget provided by the cantons of Basel-Stadt, Basel-Landschaft, the Swiss Confederation and research foundations. It is located in the City of Basel, in the immediate neighbourhood of world headquarters and research facilities of large multinational pharma, agrochemical and chemical companies such as Novartis, Roche, Syngenta, CIBA and Clariant, as well as of many small and intermediate companies. The University also has close ties with the regional technical colleges of the "Fachhochschule Nordwestschweiz", who provide access to applied research and development of economically promising ventures
