A private organism, financed by the state for a large part (Secretary of culture and communication through the Cinematographic National Center), the “Cinémathèque française” is a non-profit association.
It gathers 650 members, physical or moral persons, directors, actors, researchers, critics, technicians, cinema enthusiasts, having deposited, or donated some work or a cinematographic document.
The membership enables the depositors and donors to become members of the General Assembly. Every 3 years, they take part in the election of half of the Cinémathèque française board of directors.
The board of directors is made up of 18 members elected by the General Assembly. Each administrator is elected for 6 years. The state appoints 3 qualified personalities, and is represented by a government commissioner (the general director of the national cinematography center) and a financial inspector.
The administration council elects the committee composed of the president and the treasurer (for 3 years), and of the vice presidents and secretaries (for one year).
The General Director of the Cinémathèque française is appointed by the board of directors at the suggestion of the President, after agreement of the Cultural and Communication Minister.
The statutes of the association, modified during the board of directors reunion of September 22nd 2003, have enabled a financial commitee to establish between the state and the Cinémathèque, it is directed by Claude Berri.
