The company was founded in 1978 as Microbiology Reference Laboratory (MRL) a southern California reference laboratory that initially provided specialized laboratory tests for the diagnosis of Legionnaires' disease. In 1983 a diagnostic product division was formed to make available high quality products originally developed for use in Focus' laboratory to hospitals and to commercial labs throughout the world.
