Charles University Prague Faculty of Pharmacy

The Faculty of Pharmacy, Charles University, with its seat in the town of Hradec Kralove, was established by a government decree in 1969. This Faculty of Pharmacy has continued in the old and long-time tradition of the education of pharmacy at Charles University - the Prague pharmacists were connected with Charles Univesity from its foundation. (The owners of Prague pharmacies were enrolled in the University register, they became members of the University community, and they enjoyed its protection, but they were also under the professional supervision and jurisdiction of the rector of the University and the dean and professors of the Faculty of Medicine). The later study of pharmacy at Charles University (from 1804 a one-year, from 1834 a two-year course) was in fact carried out at more than one faculty because the subjects concerning natural sciences were studied at the Faculty of Arts or at the Faculty of Natural Sciences.The end of the study was always held at the Faculty of Medicine of the University. From 1948 a reformed four-year course of study commenced at the Faculty of Medicine, Charles Unversity. It could not develop because in 1950 it was cancelled and for some unclear reasons it was transferred to Masaryk University in Brno. Further development was carried out outside Charles University which led to the establishment of the Faculties of Pharmacy in the cities of Brno and Bratislava (1952) and to their fusion into the only one Czechoslovak Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Komenský, Bratislava (1960). Pharmaceutical education in the Czech part of the country was re-established (at Charles University) in 1969 as previously mentioned.
