Garrigues

Garrigues was founded as J&A Garrigues in 1951 by brothers Joaquín and Antonio Garrigues Díaz-Cañabate, making it one of the longest established law firms in Spain. A professor of commercial law at only 29 years of age, Joaquín is today considered one of the founding fathers of that field. It was under his direction in 1944 that work began on the reform of Spanish business law at the Instituto de Derechos Políticos (Institute of Political Rights). In 1946 he founded the Revista de Derecho Mercantil (Commercial Law Magazine) before preparing the first draft of legislation that would eventually become Spain's Business Corporations Act (1951) and Limited Liability Companies Act.Antonio practiced as a lawyer until he was appointed General Director for Registries and Notaries in 1931, during the Spanish Republic. He was ambassador to the U.S. from 1962 to 1964 and to the Vatican from 1964 to 1972. He then served as the Minister of Justice of the first government of the Spanish monarchy from 1975 to 1976. Today he is widely recognized as a pioneer in the international promotion of the Spanish legal profession.
