Humboldt Foundation
Download detailed PDF Members: One-and-a-half years after the death of Alexander von Humboldt, the Foundation named after him was established in Berlin in 1860. Its aim was to sponsor research travel abroad by German scholars. After loss of the Foundation's capital during the depression in 1923, it was re-established in 1925. Now its aim was to assist non-German scholars in undertaking postgraduate studies in Germany. After the collapse of the German Reich in 1945, the Foundation had to cease its activities. At the suggestion of former Humboldt guest-researchers, the Foundation was re-established by the Federal Republic of Germany on December 10, 1953 with its headquarters in Bonn-Bad Godesberg. More than 20,000 scholars from 125 countries have been sponsored to date.
