We actively enroll patients in Indiana Women's Oncology (IWO) protocols. The IWO is a multicenter group which runs multiple therapeutic and diagnostic trials sponsored by the National Cancer Institute. These trials touch all aspects of care of the women with cancers of the reproductive tract. Current trials include developing new agents for ovarian cancer, utilizing antibodies to treat some ovarian cancers, determining the role of laparoscopic retroperitoneal lymphadenectomy in treating patients with advanced cervical cancer and many more.IWO also is very involved in clinical studies that are run by their own physicians. Several of these recent studies have won awards at both national and international medical/scientific meetings.
IWO is also highly active in basic science research trying to elaborate new prognostic indicators and tumor markers in women with cancers of the ovary, peritoneum, uterus (including endometrium and cervix), fallopian tube, vagina, vulva and breast. Recently our work on determining the size, shape and density of patients’ cancer cell nuclei and their role in prognosis won an international award.
Surgical approaches utilized by the physicians of IWO include traditional approaches by abdominal incisions (laparotomy), as well as, advanced laparoscopic approaches where indicated. Customarily, gynecologic malignancies and pelvic reconstructive procedures have been approached by large abdominal incisions, but over the past decade laparoscopy has been able to be employed in select cases. Attention is taken to provide the best possible medical care for each individual patient treated by the physicians of IWO.
