Celsion

Founded in 1982, with a vision of using heat to kill cancer and treat other diseases, Celsion began trading publicly in 1985 under the name Cheung Laboratories, Inc. The early research focus of the Company was device oriented heat-based treatment systems. The Company was renamed Celsion Corporation and listed on the American Stock Exchange under the symbol CLN, in the mid 1990's. At that time, Celsion focused its efforts on expanding the Company's research portfolio and licensed technologies for the treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), breast cancer and heat activated drug and gene delivery systems. In 2001, Celsion determined that the greatest potential for long term shareholder value was in the Company's heat activated liposomal drug delivery system and focused its resources on obtaining approval for, commercializing and monetizing its BPH technology. The BPH product has been approved by the FDA and is being marketed as the Prolieve Thermodilatation® system by Celsion's exclusive distributor Boston Scientific Corporation. Under the distribution agreement Boston Scientific has a five year (expiring in February 2009) option to purchase the Prolieve® assets for $60 million. The funds generated to date through the commercialization of Prolieve have been used to develop the company's first drug ThermoDox™ (doxorubicin encapsulated in the company's heat activated liposome) to treat cancer. Celsion is currently engaged in two Phase I dose escalation studies for the treatment of liver cancer and breast cancer patients with loco-regional recurring chest wall cancer.
