Lumitest is a privately owned healthcare company that develops and commercializes a proprietary innovative method of measuring the Oxidative Stress within body fluids and tissue suspensions. Oxidative Stress is a novel health risk factor - a particular kind of chemical stress, which is induced by the presence, in a living organism, of exaggerate amounts of potentially dangerous compounds called free radicals. Oxidative stress is extremely dangerous because it does not exhibit any symptoms and therefore, it is recognizable with great difficulty by means of common analysis. However, if oxidative stress is not recognized and treated it can accelerate aging process and favour the appearance of several diseases, including stroke, Alzheimer's disease, myocardial infarction, ulcerous cholitis, pancreatitis and some kinds of cancer. Therefore, oxidative stress emerges as a novel health risk factor - particularly if prolonged - relatively independent from other well known risk factors, such as cigarette smoking, blood hypertension, hypercholestrolemia and hyperhomocysteinemia.
