Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics

MBB has strong research tradition starting with its first professor Jöns Jacob Berzelius who e.g. discovered elements such as selenium, cerenium and thorium. Pehr Edman who developed protein sequencing worked at the Department, and three of its investigators have received the Nobel prize; Hugo Theorell for his work on oxidative enzymes and Sune Bergström and Bengt Samuelsson who discovered prostaglandins and leukotriens. Research at MBB has had a major impact on medical research. The first commercial gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer was designed and constructed at the Department, and the structure and mechanisms of actions of biologically important compounds, such as heparin, gut hormones, enzymes of DNA synthesis, bile acids, prostaglandins and leukotriens, were elucidated at MBB. MBB, as department, was created in 1992 as a merge between former departments of Physiological Chemistry, Biochemistry and Medical Biophysics
