MBI International

Dr. Mark D. Stowers is the President and CEO of MBI International. MBI, based in Lansing, Michigan and adjacent to the campus of Michigan State University, is a leading biotechnology firm focused on the development, scale-up and commercialization of products and processes from biotechnology. Most notably, MBI has coupled biology and chemistry to develop new agricultural chemicals, food ingredients, drug intermediates, polymers and structural materials. Examples of MBI’s contributions can be found in the new products, Crestor®, a cardiovascular drug from AstraZeneca and Ingeo®, a polylactic acid from Cargill Dow. Dr. Stowers currently serves as the principal investigator on several projects funded through the US Department of Energy, US Department of Agriculture and the US Environmental Protection Agency, which are focused on the use of renewable resources to produce new chemical intermediates and materials through fermentation and advanced environmentally sound chemistry.Dr. Stowers has spent his career in the biotechnology field. His scientific training began with the investigation of various aspects of microbial physiology, biochemistry and microbial genetics involving industrially important microorganisms. He has led programs to engineer microorganisms and processes to produce lysine, biotin, specialty chemicals and industrial enzymes. He holds patents for the use of enzymes stabilized using protein engineering in clinical diagnostic applications. Dr. Stowers also contributed to the creation of industry guidelines for the regulation of food and food processing assuring the safety of foods produced by genetic modification. These guidelines were largely adopted by the Food and Drug Administration in 1990
