Since the early 1970's, the search for artificial materials with passive or inert surfaces that would present no challenge to blood or other tissues has been intense. This research has met with limited success until the Carmeda® BioActive Surface (CBASTM) was invented. Now CBASTM represents the most clinically proven of all hemo-compatible surface technologies.
In Sweden , the interest in heparin began with Professor Erik Jorpes who taught and worked at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. His interest was awakened during the 1920's when he was a guest researcher in the US. On returning to Sweden he continued the work and managed to purify heparin in 1935. His achievements led to an interest within the field among his students, and Sweden now can boast of a considerable concentration of industry and academic efforts concerning heparin and blood coagulation.
The breakthrough in surface heparinisation of artificial materials came in 1981 when Professor Olle Larm at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala invented a technique whereby heparin could be linked to different surfaces without losing its biological function. He chemically modified the heparin molecule and managed to attach them "end point" to the blood contacting surface. The heparin molecules were thereby able to interact with antithrombin and other coagulation factors in blood, and a non-thrombogenic surface was created.
In 1983, Medicarb was established to commercialise the patented invention by Prof. Larm. Since the company consisted only of chemists, a subsidiary – Carmeda - was founded in 1984 to focus exclusively on heparinising artificial surfaces for clinical use. Medicarb remained research-focused, whereas Carmeda focused on the commercial activities and was acquired by Norsk Hydro in 1986.
