World War II had ended. Young men and women were returning to hometowns across the country having seen and experienced not only the tragic and traumatic inevitabilities of war, but also the technological advances to support it. In Savannah, Georgia, those young men and women dreamed of a new kind of healthcare for their hometown.Their dreams became a reality in October 1955 when Memorial Hospital opened as a 300-bed hospital dedicated to the nation's war dead and pioneering a new era in medical services. At the time, the Savannah Morning News described Memorial Hospital as "the most modern hospital in this section of the country."
The dreams of those men and women are still alive. Now, Memorial Health is a two-state healthcare organization serving a 35-county area in southeast Georgia and South Carolina. With the dreams of our founders laying the foundation, we move forward with the vision that "Memorial Health will be the healthcare partner of choice, empowering people to achieve physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being."
Our system includes our flagship, Memorial Health University Medical Center, a 530-bed tertiary medical center; CareOne, our two-state home care division; Memorial Health University Physicians primary and specialty care networks; a major medical education program; business and industry services; and NurseOne, a 24-hour call center.
