Since our founding in 1992, our interdisciplinary team has worked to apply the cutting edge tools of biotechnology to create a new family of natural plastics, and has succeeded in transforming the biological production of these materials from laboratory curiosity to commercial reality. We have truly progressed far along the way to realizing our Vision of a sustainable future through biotechnology for natural plastics, fuels, and energy. Sustainability has been eloquently defined by the World Commission on Environment and Development as "development that meets the needs of the present world without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." It represents an enormous challenge for a world that's placing ever greater demands on the earth that supports us.
Metabolix is meeting this challenge by harnessing the solar collecting ability so highly evolved in green plants to produce materials that will replace many of those now made from petroleum and natural gas. It is an exciting effort which has had the support of the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the U.S. Department of Commerce’s NIST ATP program. In 2004, we formed a strategic alliance with Archer Daniels Midland, one of the world’s leading agricultural products processors and industrial scale fermentors, that will create a joint venture to commercialize Metabolix’s natural plastics made via fermentation – the conversion of sugars and vegetable oils using microbial biofactories.
