MethylGene Inc.MethylGene is a publicly-traded biopharmaceutical company listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol MYG. We focus in the areas of cancer, infectious disease and other diseases such as diabetes, Huntington's and inflammation. We currently have two drugs in development being tested in human clinical trials: MGCD0103 and MG98. Our strategy is to partner our programs to complement our business objectives. We have successfully partnered with MGI Pharma, Taiho Pharmaceutical, Pharmion Corporation, Merck and EnVivo Pharmaceuticals.MethylGene's experienced in-house medicinal chemistry group is able to develop drugs that specifically target enzymes that are involved in certain diseases such as cancer. We do this by understanding the characteristics of the enzyme involved in the disease and then creating a molecule that will specifically inhibit that enzyme from functioning. In this way, the enzyme may be controlled. Once we have a set of lead molecules, we have a seasoned biology team test our candidate drugs in animal models. Molecules that have the desired profile become clinical candidates and are eventually tested in human clinical trials. The advantage of having drugs that are specific to their target is that they should only affect diseased cells leaving healthy cells untouched. This is in contrast to other approaches such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy where both healthy and diseased cells are affected causing unnecessary side effects.
