Neurophyxia
Download detailed PDF Members: Perinatal asphyxia (hypoxia-ischemia) is a condition in which lack of blood flow coincides with low oxygen content during birth. Perinatal asphyxia is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in the newborn baby. About 14.6% of all deaths at birth is caused by perinatal asphyxia. In the western world about 0.9% (i.e. 100-130,000) of newborns suffers from perinatal asphyxia. About 10% dies and another 15% is severely handicapped due to long-term complications such as mental retardation, spasticity, learning difficulties and/or epilepsy. Furthermore, it is increasingly recognized that children with a rather mild asphyxia, who seem initially to recover without complications, have behavioral problems in childhood, which can be traced back to this perinatal insult . Until now no established therapy is available to treat or prevent perinatal asphyxia. Because of the severity of the disease major effort is spent to find an effective rescue treatment. Perinatal asphyxia meets the criteria for an orphan drug indication since it affects less then 5 patients on 10.000 inhabitants, is a life-threatening, serious debilitating disease without an established therapy
