Ab 2007 wird in Finnland ausschließlich virusinaktiviertes Humanplasma (SD-Plasma) eingesetzt. Eine entsprechende Vereinbarung wurde am 9. Juni von Octapharma und dem finnischen Roten Kreuz getroffen. Gleichzeitig stellt das finnische Rote Kreuz die Herstellung von gefrorenem Frischplasma ein. Das in Finnland genutzte SD-Plasma wird ausschließlich aus finnischem Plasma hergestellt und exklusiv vom finnischen Roten Kreuz vertrieben. Das Ziel dieser Entscheidung ist die Verbesserung der Sicherheit von Plasmatransfusionen. So wurde z. B. die schwerwiegende, unter gefrorenem Frischplasma auftretende Nebenwirkung TRALI (Transfusionsassoziierte akute Lungeninsuffizienz) bislang unter SD-Plasma (mehr als 5 Mio. Beutel weltweit) nicht gemeldet
