Panacos Pharmaceuticals

Panacos is a Delaware Corporation founded in 1992. Panacos' scientific and clinical programs originated in anti-infective technologies designed to prevent the spread of infectious disease by blood transfusions. In March of 2005, Panacos merged with V.I. Technologies, Inc. (Vitex), a biotechnology company developing products designed to improve the safety of the world's blood supply. The merger with Panacos immediately expanded the Vitex pipeline into novel, high value therapeutics. The Panacos team that joined Vitex is recognized for fundamental contributions to HIV biology and drug development. The combined company has a strong intellectual property position and the potential to accomplish significant near term milestones to create value from our promising pipeline. The corporate headquarters for Panacos is in Watertown, Massachusetts. The Company has an R&D facility in Gaithersburg, Maryland, focused on the discovery and development of novel therapeutics for HIV and other serious viral diseases. Panacos is developing the next generation of anti-infective products through discovery and development of small molecule oral drugs for the treatment of HIV and other major human viral diseases. Panacos’ lead candidate, bevirimat (PA-457), is the first in a new class of oral HIV therapeutics under development called maturation inhibitors, discovered by Panacos scientists and their academic collaborators. By targeting a novel step in the virus life cycle, maturation inhibitors are designed to have potent activity against a broad range of HIV, including strains that are resistant to existing classes of drugs. Drug resistance is the most pressing problem in HIV therapy and the leading cause of treatment failure. Panacos' proprietary discovery technologies focus on novel targets in the virus life cycle, including virus maturation and virus fusion.
