The Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) was founded by Xerox Corporation in 1970 with the charter to create options for Xerox’s future growth. Inventing technologies such as laser printing, the Ethernet, the graphical user interface, and distributed computing earned PARC its reputation as one of the world’s premier sources of technology-driven innovation.Almost every Xerox product on the market today incorporates or has been influenced by PARC inventions. PARC has produced nearly 30 new companies, licensed its technologies to industry leaders, and made significant scientific contributions in fields as diverse as materials science, distributed computing, linguistics, and sociology.
Today, PARC provides strategic research services, technology, and intellectual property to industry partners and government agencies. Xerox remains a significant customer for PARC research, but PARC’s commercial focus has broadened to include relationships with some of the world’s leaders in enterprise computing, consumer electronics, biomedical sciences, publishing and printing, and renewable energy.
