The Police Forensic Science Laboratory Dundee

The Police Forensic Science Laboratory Dundee was established in April 1989 and currently employs 57people comprising Forensic and DNA scientists, Assistant Forensic Scientists, Forensic Support and DNA Liaisonstaff and Laboratory Assistants. It is headed by Mike Baxter, who is Head of Forensic Science Services.There are four main sections within PFSLD comprising Biology, Chemistry, DNA Database and Quality/Administration.PFSLD is funded by and serves Central Scotland Police, Fife Constabulary and Tayside Police and along with the three other Police Laboratories in Scotland , is independent from the Forensic Science Service of England and Wales. UKAS Accreditation currently covers all DNA services in casework, Criminal Justice Samples and Crime scene stains for inclusion on the National DNA database in Birmingham and paternity testing, as well as all Drugs and Alcohol Analyses (alcoholic Liquor and Blood/Urine), and for the identification of drugs.
The PFSLD was awarded Investors in People status in October 1999.
The laboratory serves a geographical area of 4,417 square miles, covering an area from Montrose to Falkirk and a population of 1,004,849. The main role of PFSLD continues to be as an asset in the investigation and detection of crime on behalf of its Constituent Police Forces. This work ranges from prompt initial attendance at the scene of crime through the often painstaking examination of items recovered from the scene of a crime or suspected persons to the presentation of evidence in court.
