His research team is responsible for gene discovery, medicinal chemistry, and drug discovery efforts. Dr. Altar has published 120 articles in peer-reviewed journals that include Science, Nature, PNAS, and the Burger’s Medicinal Chemistry series. He pioneered methods for receptor localization using computerized image analysis and discovered the serotonin/ dopamine receptor binding patterns of antipsychotic drugs, which typify the atypical antipsychotics now in use. His team at Regeneron identified brain actions of neurotrophic factors, including roles in human depression, now an experimental clinical approach. As Director for Global Neuroscience Research at Otsuka America Pharmaceuticals, Dr. Altar led the team that discovered and co-developed aripiprazole (Abilify), recently FDA-approved.
