Q-RNA, Inc., was founded in 1996 by Abraham Grossman, Ph.D., a molecular biologist with both academic and industry experience. The early efforts of Q-RNA were focused on the development of RNA (ribonucleic acid) ligands and their interaction with proteins. Recent discoveries have put Q-RNA in the forefront of opening the secrets to a vast number of protein misfolding disorders representing major unmet medical needs. Its most recent founder, Donald F. Weaver, M.D., Ph.D., former founder of Neurochem, Inc., adds compound libraries, rational drug design and medicinal chemistry to the Company’s formidable array of technology and capabilities. Both the Company and Dr. Weaver believe that Q-RNA’s unique discovery/validation systems combined with rationally designed compounds will be a successful way to provide effective drugs to treat Alzheimer’s disease.
Combining Q-RNA’s drug discovery and optimization technologies with partnered drug libraries and the knowledge to rationally design therapeutics to target Alzheimer's disease will accelerate the Company’s rapid transition into an integrated drug development company. Q-RNA’s discovery and optimization tools are focused on Tau protein, while its in-licensed compounds are targeted to beta amyloid (A-beta or A-ß). Thus, Q-RNA will have drugs for both of the most important forms of protein implicated as causes of Alzheimer’s disease. The Company’s first drug candidate comes from its A-beta targeted library of compounds, and initial pre-clinical testing has begun.
