St Charles Pharmaceuticals is developing novel therapeutics targeting pain, neuroprotection and neuroinflammation. St Charles concentrates on translational research and drug development. The Intellectual Property was licensed out of Louisiana State University from ongoing drug discovery research collaborations between the company’s founder, Dr. Nicolas Bazan, Villere Professor and Head of the Center for Excellence in Neurosciences at LSUHSC, and his collaborator, Dr. Julio Gomez, Chair of Organic Chemistry at Universidad de Alcala, in Spain. The Company seeks other licensing opportunities in the pain and neuroinflammation area from outside of the LSU Health Sciences Center.
From 2000 until 2005, St Charles Pharmaceuticals was operating as a virtual company funded by $2.73M in NIH SBIR grants and a $4.3M Series A round by a single private investor. During the last five years, the founders have succeeded in progressing the lead compound, SCP-1, a novel analgesic, into Phase I clinical safety studies. The second-generation compound, SCP-123, is ready for IND-enabling studies.
