IBST is the sum of three integral centres, Cranfield Biotechnology Centre, Cranfield Biomedical Centre, and Cranfield Centre for Analytical Science. We are the formative centre for life science research within Cranfield University, with diagnostics and related devices as the major focus. IBST is a truly multidisciplinary department with a strong collaborative ethos and undertakes world-class research and development for both industry, healthcare and academia, in addition to providing postgraduate education and professional training. Excellence in diagnostics is assured.
The Biotechnology Centre’s commercial and academic expertise focuses on three main areas: medical diagnostics, environmental diagnostics and food biotechnology. The Centre’s commercial work has been applied in many commercial devices including the ExacTech TM home blood glucose monitor and Oxoid’s Dryspot range of products. Cranfield BioMedical Centre and Cranfield Analytical Centre complement and further strengthen the Institute of BioScience and Technology’s established focus on excellence that is supported by the full resources of Cranfield University. Cranfield BioMedical Centre operates internationally in healthcare delivery and biomedical research for industry and is dedicated to providing solutions in research and training for in vivo and in vitro diagnostic medicine. This Centre responds to the combined needs of industrialist, health professionals and clinicians. Cranfield Analytical Centre’s measurement expertise is unique in that it encompasses the scientific, engineering and medical disciplines. Commercial services offered by all three Centres of Excellence within the Institute of BioScience and Technology include consultancy, feasibility studies, market and contract research and development. Each centre is proactive in delivering specialist training and short courses specifically designed to meet the needs of individual clients. Industry, environmentalists and students benefit from the wide range of inter-disciplinary skills that are available within a single dedicate unit. Each Centre offers postgraduate MSc and PhD degree programmes.
Our flourishing industrial contracts division has been at the forefront of diagnosis development since 1981, creating a wide variety of products for industrial clients. Modern well-equipped laboratories (including a state-of-the-art fabrication facility for the pre-production of sensor devices) ensure that all industrial contract work is conducted at the highest levels of competence and professionalism.
Our research and development activity, coupled with our knowledge of the marketplace for diagnostics also gives us the edge over our competitors in consultancy, where we are happy to examine the feasibility, marketplace, competition and likely cost of diagnostic devices. We also posses the expertise to provide expert witnesses in a range of litigation scenarios.
Research is centred on the use of diagnostics devices in healthcare, the environment, food and defence and policing. Core research topics include enzyme and immunoassay based detection systems used in conjunction with electrochemical, optical and fluorescent transducers. Non-biological approaches are used where appropriate and where they use technology similar to that employed in biosensors. The Institute is looking to future assay techniques, being involved in the development of the sensing of volatiles of importance in infection and disease more generally, biomimics (via synthetic and combinatorial chemistry and imprinted approaches) and also by searching for new diagnostic markers. These will arise out of a diverse range of studies, in areas that include microbial metabolism and cancer cell biology. By far the greatest effort is currently within healthcare, with the environment featuring strongly. The Institute has particular emphasis on the development of one-use, devices used at point of care (healthcare) or in the field (environment and food)
