Takara Bio started when Takara Shuzo Co., Ltd. (which is now Takara Holdings Inc.) established the Central Research Institute and launched the bio-related business in 1967. Our genetic engineering business was launched in 1979 when we started sales of first domestically produced restriction enzymes that identify DNA sequences and cut DNA at a specific location, which are essential reagents for genetic engineering research. In 1988 we introduced the PCR method, by which a few fragments of DNA can be amplified more than one million times in a short amount of time, for the first time in Japan, and we have sold PCR-related reagents and instruments since then. Besides, we were the first in Japan to promote the DNA chip technology, which is used in gene expression analysis. Takara Bio has been contributing to the genetic engineering research and development in Japan by introducing key biotechnologies to researchers. In recent years, the range of application of genetic engineering has been expanding; in ex vivo gene therapy in particular, we developed RetroNectin method, which has now become a world standard, and it is now starting to be used in gene therapies for treatment of refractory diseases such as AIDS and cancer at research institutions all over the world including National Cancer Center in Japan, the National Cancer Institute in the U.S., and French National Institute of Health and Medical Research.
