Download detailed PDF Members: Monoclonal antibody technology was the research breakthrough of the 1980’s. With the discovery by Milstein and Kohler in Cambridge, England, Hybritech became the first company dedicated to the production of monoclonal antibodies, commercializing the first diagnostic tests and leading to two subsequent companies that furthered monoclonal antibody development, GenProbe and IDEC. The use of monoclonal antibodies as therapeutics was limited because the human body developed an immune response to the early generation drugs; this problem was not circumvented until methods to generate or engineer human monoclonal antibodies were developed in the 1990’s. Protein based (antibody) therapeutics are now rapidly finding their way into the forefront of modern day medicine. The promise of this novel class of drugs is recognized widely within the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. Over 250 companies and research entities have monoclonal antibody therapeutics, either in clinical or pre-clinical development. Market penetration of monoclonal antibodies worldwide is estimated to reach $40 billion by 2018.
