VaxGen Inc. is a biopharmaceutical company focused on the development, manufacture and commercialization of biologic products for the prevention and treatment of human infectious disease. Founded in 1995, VaxGen’s business strategy emphasizes the development and commercialization of vaccine candidates for the prevention of potential bioterrorism threats, specifically anthrax and smallpox. Our longer-term strategy entails leveraging our expertise and infrastructure to expand our product portfolio beyond biodefense vaccines and into commercial biologic products.
On November 4, 2004 VaxGen announced the U.S. government award of an $877.5 million contract to supply 75 million doses of anthrax vaccine for civilian defense.
To date, we have in-licensed all of our product candidates at little or no expense to the company. Although we focus on biologic products for the treatment and prevention of human infectious diseases and have significant experience with vaccines and advanced biopharmaceutical manufacturing, we are not wedded to any particular platform technology. We believe this strategy allows us to move quickly and opportunistically to take advantage of promising new products that serve important medical needs.
