WHO

Welcome to the WHO Regional Office for EuropeWe at the Regional Office invite you to discover more about our activities and history, and the values that guide us.These are indeed remarkable times for public health. The late twentieth century saw public health undergo a historically unmatched transformation. Economic development and scientific advances increased the length and quality of life of many.
Despite the remarkable achievements of the past, the new century sees more than 165 million people in the 52 countries that make up the WHO European Region living below the poverty line. These people live under conditions of economic instability and social exclusion that prevent them from realizing their right to a healthy life – a basic human right of all citizens of the world.
Unfortunately, securing this basic human right remains a distant goal. In an increasingly interdependent world, this goal can be achieved only through cooperation on health issues. With that in mind, we would welcome your joining the efforts to create an equitable, healthy world.
This section of the web site explains how the Regional Office works to accomplish its mission. That said, I want to be very clear. The age of paternalism is over. In the end, communities and governments decide how they can best utilize our services to benefit their citizens’ health. Our part is constantly to adapt and develop to ensure that ours ervices are well matched to the needs of the countries we serve.
