As a fully integrated drug delivery business, we deliver clinically meaningful benefits to patients, by using our extensive experience and proprietary delivery technologies in partnership with pharmaceutical companies to develop new and innovative products.
For 40 years, we have been applying our skills and knowledge from concept development, right through to full scale manufacturing. We have been, and continue to be, the drug delivery provider of choice for a broad range of pharmaceutical companies, including many of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies. We offer our clients unrivalled drug delivery expertise with a suite of commercially launched, proprietary, technology-driven solutions.
From NanoCrystal® technology for poorly water soluble compounds, to customised oral drug technologies, we have a strong track record of innovation and experience.
Technologies
Elan Drug Technologies has a unique platform of validated technologies to offer our clients - from Oral controlled release, delayed release, pulsatile release delivery systems as well as technology solutions for poorly water soluble compounds.
We have a complete range of capabilities from formulation development through to commercial scale manufacture in modern facilities. Our technologies are supported by robust patent estate of over 1,700 patents and pending applications.
NanoCrystal® Technology – now commercialised involves reducing the size of drug particles, typically to less than 2,000 nanometres. By reducing particle size, the drug’s exposed surface area is increased. The nanoparticles are then stabilised to maintain their reduced particle size. The result is a stable drug formulation that exhibits an increased dissolution rate. With four products launched and US$1.8B+ annual in-market sales, it is a proven Innovation for poorly water-soluble compounds. Patent Protected with over 1,000 patents/patent applications in U.S. and rest of the world, it has been optimised and simplified from over 15 years of development behind the technology, is applicable to all dosage forms and has been manufactured at commercial scale since 2001.
Our Oral Controlled Release (OCR) technologies has been incorporated and successfully commercialised into two dozen products worldwide. Our Oral Controlled Release Technology platform allows a range of release profiles and dosage forms to be engineered. Customised release profiles for oral dosage forms such as extended release, delayed release and pulsatile release have all been developed and commercialised.
Agreements
Acorda Therapeutics
EDT developed Fampridine-SR, using one of their proprietary Oral Controlled Release Technologies, the MXDAS® (MatriX Drug Absorption System) Technology for Acorda Therapeutics. The FDA announced in May 2009 that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have accepted the Fampridine-SR New Drug Application (NDA) for filing, assigning Priority Review and a Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) date of October 22, 2009. The PDUFA date is the target date for the FDA to complete its review of the Fampridine-SR NDA.
Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical
Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research & Development, L.L.C. has submitted a New Drug Application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for paliperidone palmitate, an investigational, once-monthly atypical antipsychotic intramuscular injection, for the treatment of schizophrenia and the prevention of recurrence of the symptoms of schizophrenia. Paliperidone palmitate is a long-acting injectable ester of the active ingredient in INVEGA™1 which utilises Elan's NanoCrystal® Technology. Upon approval, paliperidone palmitate will be marketed in the U.S. by Janssen, L.P.
MAP and AstraZeneca
Agreement to apply Elan's proprietary NanoCrystal® technology to defined inhalation therapies. MAP has been collaborating with Elan to develop a nebulised form of budesonide for the treatment of asthma. This agreement covers nebulised delivery of budesonide and combinations of budesonide with beta agonists. Budesonide is an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid indicated for the maintenance treatment of asthma as well as prophylactic therapy for this condition. In all delivery forms, including nebulised delivery, budesonide sales exceeded US$1bn worldwide in 2004. Asthma affects approximately 17 million Americans, 5 million of whom are children. The nebulised portion of the asthma market is the fastest growing segment, largely due to the increasingly high diagnosis rates for asthma in the paediatric population. MAP subsequently signed an agreement with AstraZeneca to commercialise this product.
Roche

The agreement will provide Roche with access to NanoCrystal® technology and the right to apply it to a number of proprietary drug candidates. Under the terms of the Agreement, Elan will receive from Zogenix an undisclosed upfront payment and future payments upon the achievement of clinical and regulatory milestones for the product.
