BioRobotics Limited

BioRobotics was founded as a privately funded venture with the aim of providing quality solutions to automation and robotics in the field of molecular biology. The BioPick, the company’s first product, is used for the generation of genomic libraries. Capable of picking randomly grown colonies of yeast, Escherichia coli or phage into 96 or 384 well microtitre plates, the instrument runs unattended for up to 10 hours. In this time it will pick up to 10,000 clones and inoculate them into microplates, which are filled with media on-line. The BioGrid was added to the range in 1996. Compact sized, but with high throughput and capacity it is used to produce gridded arrays on membranes. This year BioRobotics has added the MicroGrid, an adaptation of the BioGrid, which allows the generation of custom microarrays of nucleic acids on solid substrates. A team of professional engineers and biologists work together to create optimised solutions to specific problems, and it is this multidisciplinary approach that has resulted in machines that are reliable, compact, easy to use and competitively priced. Distributor agreements are in place in Japan, Taiwan, China, Korea, New Zealand and Australia. There is a subsidiary company in Boston, MA, USA, and sales and marketing is direct from the UK to the rest of the world. BioRobotics has the long-term aim of continuing to grow through new product development funded from income. Ideas for further products are continually being evaluated.
