Lorus Therapeutics

Lorus Therapeutics Inc. is a pharmaceutical company focused on the development of cancer therapies. Lorus' goal is to capitalize on its pre-clinical, clinical and regulatory expertise by developing new drug candidates that can be used, either alone, or in combination, to successfully manage cancer.

The Company is currently developing a number of novel anti-cancer compounds called NuChem Analogues, based on a commonly used anti-fungal agent, clotrimazole. This technology includes the anti-cancer applications of clotrimazole itself. Clotrimazole has been shown to have unique anti-proliferative activities against cancer cells, including the inhibition of key steps in tumour growth and angiogenesis (new blood vessel formation). Preclinical investigation of a number of these compounds in different tumour models is currently underway.

Virulizin®, a sterile liquid drug formulation for injection, is also being developed. Virulizin® is a new drug with novel biological response modifier activities. It has been shown to stimulate normal peripheral blood monocytes to express cytocidal activity in a dose-dependent manner. North American clinical investigations have focused on advanced pancreatic cancer, malignant melanoma, invasive cervicaluterine carcinoma and HIV-related Kaposi's sarcoma.

Lorus Therapeutics' objective is to maximize the therapeutic value and potential commercial success of its technology. The Company intends to pursue specific developmental, manufacturing, marketing and distribution arrangements with one or more strategic pharmaceutical partners. No such arrangements have been finalized, but the Company is in late-stage discussions with potential strategic partners.

To expand its product pipeline, Lorus Therapeutics is currently reviewing in-licensing opportunities involving new products and technologies in the areas of oncology. Lorus is focusing its efforts on developing therapies with different targets to provide tools for the management of the disease. By treating patients using drugs from several different therapeutic areas, using each drug alone or in combination, the chances of successfully managing cancer can be increased significantly. Lorus is currently developing cytostatic and immunotherapy drug candidates and will continue to look for products in different areas.
