Apoptosis is a form of programmed cell death that occurs as part of the natural development and maintenance of healthy tissues and organs. The field of apoptosis is relatively new and received little attention before 1993. Since that time, apoptosis has received growing attention and acceptance in the fields of basic biological sciences, medicine and biotechnology.
