Martek Biosciences

Martek Biosciences Corporation is a leader in the development and commercialization of high value products derived frommicroalgae. Martek's leading products are nutritional oils used as ingredients in infant formula and encapsulated for use as dietary supplements. The Company's nutritional oils are comprised of fatty acid components which many researchers believe may enhance mental and visual development in infants and play a pivotal role in brain function throughout life. Martek has licensed these oils to six infant formula manufacturers, representing over 40% of the estimated $5 billion worldwide market for infant formula. Four of these licensees are marketing term infant formula products containing Martek's oils

in seven countries and pre-term infant formula products containing the Company's oils in 50 countries. Additional applications of the Company's platform technology include currently marketed products and technologies to assist in drug discovery and diagnostics. Martek intends to continue to exploit the largely untapped commercial opportunities of microalgae. To that end, the Company maintains a library of more than 3,000 live microalgal species and a related database, which it believes are among the largest such resources available worldwide.
