Medigene AG (NMarkt: MDG) is a publicly quoted German biopharmaceutical company with Headquarters in Martinsried, Munich, and a subsidiary, Medigene Inc. in San Diego, California. MediGene combines a broad technology platform with products in pre-clinical and clinical development. The company has built up core competence in cardiac and cancer diseases. Founded in 1994, MediGene now has 150 employees (as of December 1, 2001) of which about 80% work in R&D. Around 50% are scientists with a Ph.D.degree.
The Company’s multi-tiered business strategy has generated a number of proprietary enabling technologies to create a portfolio of novel therapeutic opportunities and drug candidates for in-house development and out-licensing.
Based on its successful research work, MediGene has so far developed five fundamental, patented platform technologies. The ITD, CVLP, AAV, HSV and amplicon technologies are the foundation for the development of novel drugs that target the cause of diseases, a resource that can supply the Company’s product pipeline - and those of potential pharmaceutical partners - with new development projects.
Seven products are currently in clinical trials and registration process, the first product launches are expected for 2003. In addition, the product portfolio is to be complemented through strategic in-licensing and potential acquisitions of companies with a strategic fit and complementary technologies.
