Biocitech Technology Park
Announces Oroxcell and Mutabilis - Second Research Collaboration
Collaboration will speed compound profiling and preclinical development in antibacterial drug discovery for infectious diseases
Romainville, Paris, France, September
12, 2007 - Biocitech, the Paris technology park for life sciences,
announced today that Oroxcell, a CRO focused on bioavailability of life
science compounds, has entered into its second research collaboration with
Mutabilis, a biopharmaceutical company specialized in antibacterial drug
discovery. The agreement will add value to novel therapeutics discovered by
Mutabilis for the treatment of a major infectious disease. This second
collaboration follows a two-year project involving the selection of lead
compounds on an anti-infective drug. Successful collaboration on the first
project has resulted in Mutabilis deciding to return to Oroxcell to carry out
the studies to select its new anti-staphylococcus preclinical candidate prior
to entering into development.
Under the terms of the agreement,
Oroxcell will fully profile the Mutabilis compound in terms of in-vitro
and in vivo ADME and physicochemical parameters. It will also establish
the formulation strategy using its proprietary FSE(R) (Formulation Search
Engine) Technology to speed up the preclinical development in a later phase.
"We have been very satisfied with how
well Oroxcell's technologies have worked for us in the past," said Dr. Sonia
Escaich, Chief Executive Officer of Mutabilis. "In addition, the dedication,
the high degree of professionalism and the unwavering client service shown by
the Oroxcell team have convinced us that we should go back to them to help us
move our next program forward. The collaboration gives us the opportunity to
use Oroxcell's one-stop-shopping platform to obtain fast and high-quality
data, which bring real added value to our projects. The rapid selection of
compounds with optimized ADME and physicochemical properties is critical to
the development of our proprietary drug candidate."
"We are delighted to have been selected
for another of Mutabilis' highly innovative projects," said Jean Pachot,
President and Chief Scientific Officer of Oroxcell. "Mutabilis' decision to
come back to us is further confirmation of the value we bring to biotechnology
and drug discovery companies. Our fully integrated ADME-Physicochemical
platform and FSE approach definitively accelerates the drug discovery process
while optimizing the rate of success in the late phase of development. Time
and quality are key indicators for success in life science industries, and
Oroxcell offers an integrated platform for addressing key issues and/or
proposing the most suitable formulation strategies to speed up R&D pipelines.
The growing number of deals made by Oroxcell and feedback on the high level of
satisfaction from our customers reflect the quality of our data as well as
Oroxcell's commitment to focus on project-oriented approaches rather than data
generation."
"Biocitech welcomes the news that Oroxcell and Mutabilis, two of Biocitech's resident companies, are continuing their successful collaboration," said Jacques Lhomel, President of the Biocitech technology park. "We encourage our residents to leverage their technologies by working together as well as by concluding deals with outside organizations, as working together maximizes the benefits from the favorable environment we have established for life science companies at Biocitech." About Mutabilis
Mutabilis, Paris, France, is a
biopharmaceutical company specialized in antibacterial drug discovery. The
company's focus is to create a new class of anti-infectious drugs by
developing antibacterial molecules with new mechanisms of action. These drugs
selectively aim at the pathogenic bacteria for which there is an urgent
medical need due to the spread of resistance. This new approach opens the way
to new treatments for severe infections, especially in the field of nosocomial
infections. Mutabilis is now focused on developing three major projects of
small molecule inhibitors of new antibacterial targets.
Mutabilis has identified specific
antigens for development of new vaccines or monoclonal antibodies against
pathogenic strains implicated in nosocomial and neonatal infections. Since it
was established in 2001, Mutabilis has raised more than EUR 10 million (USD
13M) from investors including Auriga Partners, AXA Private Equity, BioAm,
Crédit Agricole Private Equity and Inserm-Transfert. Mutabilis is based in the
Biocitech technology park at Romainville, near Paris. For more information on

About Oroxcell
Founded in mid 2004, Oroxcell is a
leading French CRO focused on bioavailability of compounds issued from life
sciences. The company has extensive expertise in both innovative formulations
to improve oral absorption, and new in vitro technologies to evaluate
ADME parameters, physicochemistry, bioanalysis and molecular pharmaceutics.
Oroxcell's patented formulation technologies offer a real opportunity to add
value to life sciences products. Oroxcell has won a number of innovation
awards and its unique "one-stop-shopping" platform covers a broad spectrum of
technologies, which allow its partners to reach their scientific and economic
goals faster and more easily. Oroxcell also holds an exclusive licence for an
innovative lipid-based formulation system aimed at improving oral absorption
of a broad spectrum of compounds. The company is developing its own compounds
for the treatment of pain. Oroxcell is based in the Biocitech technology park
at Romainville, near Paris.
