Cellexus Biosystems plc launches the CellMaker
Lite2TM – the latest generation of its novel disposable bioreactor

Cellexus Biosystems plc (PLUS Markets: CBIO),
the specialist in the design, manufacture and commercialisation of novel
disposable technology for growing cells, announces the launch of the CellMaker
Lite2TM disposable bioreactor.
The CellMaker Lite2 is the latest generation of disposable bioreactor from the
Company and incorporates a wealth of new features, many of them direct requests
from early customers. One of the key features is that the CellMaker Lite2 can
now control the flow of blended gases that are required to grow mammalian cells.
The system can also deliver gases to the novel aeration system in the base of
the disposable cell culture bag (the CellexusBagTM) and to the large surface
area above the cell culture (called the headspace) independently of each other,
a considerable advantage over other products currently available. Other features
include a 60% smaller footprint so that less bench space is required, new
control software and several other changes to make it easier for the operator to
instal and start the cell culture process without the need for a service
engineer or other installation specialist.

customers requested more flexibility whilst retaining the simplicity of the
first-generation product. We have also been able to accommodate requests for
easier operation and a smaller unit size to address limited bench space in busy
laboratories.”

CellexusBags, which feature novel disposable sensors to measure pH and the
concentration of dissolved oxygen in the cell culture medium. These sensors will
be incorporated as standard in every CellexusBag, giving a level of culture
control and monitoring which has been difficult to achieve without the use of
expensive, re-usable sensors. Our disposable sensors eliminate the risk of
contamination as, unlike alternative products in the marketplace, they are
integrated into the disposable CellexusBag during manufacture.”
Test marketing of the CellMaker Lite2TM at BioProcess International (Paris),
BIO2007 (Boston, USA) and Protein Engineering Summit (Boston, USA) met with an
enthusiastic response.

Cellexus Biosystems has developed a range of value-added disposables to help
researchers in the biopharmaceutical industry and academia develop new
biopharmaceutical products from cell lines. Biopharmaceuticals are the new breed
of medicines, generated by culturing cells in bioreactors. These medicines are
often proteins, such as antibodies or can be vaccines. The potential of future
medical treatments offered by stem cell research would also fall within this
category. Sales of biopharmaceuticals reached US$60 billion in 2005 and are
growing at 20% per annum.
The Company has already developed a family of products. Three products have been
developed all based around the core technology - the CellexusBagTM – and are
marketed under the name: CellMaker LiteTM. These products potentially offer
significant technological improvements for cell culture and cell growth in the
developing disposables market.
Unlike competitive products, the CellexusBag products do not need to be stirred,
shaken, rocked or rolled, which means the equipment used to manage the cell
culture process is very simple and inexpensive. A patent application protecting
the Company’s intellectual property was filed in December 2005.
