Cellexus Biosystems plc appoints Appropriate
Technical Resources Inc. as US Distributor
June 18th 2007: Cellexus Biosystems plc (PLUS Markets: CBIO), specialist in
the design, manufacture and commercialisation of novel disposable technology for
growing cells, has entered into a non-exclusive distribution agreement with
Appropriate Technical Resources, Inc. (ATR).
Under the agreement, ATR, one of the country’s major providers of fermentation
equipment and cell culture systems, will distribute Cellexus Biosystems’
products throughout the US. The agreement marks a significant boost to the sales
reach of Cellexus Biosystems within the US, and will provide its growing
customer base with further local support. It represents a substantial milestone
for both companies and is one of several steps that Cellexus is taking to expand
its market share in the US.
Commenting on the agreement, CEO at Cellexus Biosystems, Dr Kevin Auton said:
“We are very pleased to enter into this formal agreement with ATR. We have
worked quietly behind the scenes with ATR for six months, establishing a close
relationship and planning how best to serve the world’s largest community of
bioresearchers.
“As a partner, ATR are a great fit for us. They know our customers and the
challenges that face them. They have a collaborative approach that our customers
welcome and they’re recognised for their ability to sell and support bioreactor
instrumentation and consumables.
“ATR will be supported by our applications laboratory facility in the Mountain
Top Campus at Lehigh University (Pennsylvania, US). This laboratory will develop
new protocols for cell culture, test new products that Cellexus are launching
throughout 2007 and serve as a demonstration and support centre for ATR’s
customers.”
ATR’s Vice President, LuAnn Bisciano commented:
“ATR is very excited about having the opportunity to work alongside Cellexus and
to have been selected to bring CellMakerTM products to customers in the US. The
Cellexus technology is the type of innovation that we know our customers have
been seeking and we look forward to presenting these products to our customer
base.
“We have sold over 5,000 flask shaker systems into the US market, and many of
our customers are looking to scale-up to higher volumes but are discouraged by
the thought of using a traditional bioreactor. The CellMaker Lite2TM will give
our customers the opportunity to scale-up without the complexity of using a
glass or stainless steel bioreactor. The CellMaker product range is a much
needed option in the market.”

Notes to editors:
Cellexus Biosystems has developed a range of value-added disposables to help
researchers in the biopharmaceutical industry and academia, develop new
biopharmaceutical products from cell lines. Biopharmaceuticals are the new breed
of medicines, generated by culturing cells in bioreactors. These medicines are
often proteins, such as antibodies or can be vaccines. The potential of future
medical treatments offered by stem cell research would also fall within this
category. Sales of biopharmaceuticals reached US$60 billion in 2005 and are
growing at 20% per annum.
The Company has already developed a family of products. Three products have been
developed all based around the core technology - the CellexusBagTM – and are
marketed under the name: CellMaker Lite2TM. These products potentially offer
significant technological improvements for cell culture and cell growth in the
developing disposables market.
Unlike competitive products, the CellexusBag products do not need to be stirred,
shaken, rocked or rolled, which means the equipment used to manage the cell
culture process is very simple and inexpensive. A patent application protecting
the Company’s intellectual property was filed in December 2005.
